After 42 years as the Ellis Bird Farm, staff members have announced they are moving forward with an updated name for the site.

“Our core values of education, research, and stewardship remain the same and we are honored to continue the Ellis’s legacy as the Ellis Nature Centre,” noted a release.

“The board sees that in this day and age of electronic media, the words ‘Nature Center’ more accurately reflect the types of nature-based activities we offer,” said Ron Bjorge, incoming chair.

The rebranding includes a new logo and website which will be released in May.

“MEGlobal Canada ULC (MEGlobal) has been a proud supporter of environmental education and sustainability in Central Alberta since Union Carbide began operations on the Prentiss site more than 40 years ago,” said Amanda VanderBurg, MEGlobal Canadian production director.

“Our commitment to preserving the work of Charlie and Winnie Ellis continues, and I am excited to learn of the Ellis Bird Farm changing its name to the Ellis Nature Centre.

“This change is very appropriate because visitors to the site don’t just learn about birds. They also learn about our rich and diverse ecosystem, sustainable agriculture practices, and the value of conservation for current and future generations.

“This new name will reflect the profound respect and love for nature that Charlie and Winnie offered to share with their communities, and I hope many people will take advantage of visiting this gem of a place.”
