Yettis clinch first place spot in Southwest

The Yettis played the final home game of the regular season on June 24, and now move on to playoffs

With another three wins under their belt, the Sylvan Lake Yettis lacrosse team unseated the Red Deer Renegades first place spot in the southwest division.

Placing first in the southwest, with a total of 34 points, the Yettis finished the regular season in second place in the south, behind the High River Heat.

While both the Yettis and the Heat have the same point spread, it came down to the winningest team for first place. The Heat finished the regular season 17-1, where the Yettis finished the season 16-2.

The Yettis finished the season on a high at home. The home team beat the Calgary Sabrecats 16-2 on June 24.

Adam Sylvester kicked the game off into high gear for the Yettis, scoring early in the first period, assisted by Taylor McLaughlin. Sylvester went one to score four more times over the course of the game.

The Yettis scored six times in the first 20 minutes of play, and kept the visiting Sabrecats to just one point.

The ball continued to roll in the second period, with another four points scored by the Yettis. Superb defence and goaltending kept the Sabrecats to one point.

Another six points were racked up before the end of the third period for the Yettis, with Tristen Hess sealing the nail in the coffin with a little less than two minutes left in the game.

While the Yettis put up a formidable defence, the Sabrecats were able to make it through one more time in the third period, ending the game with a score of 16-2.

Going into the playoffs both the Sylvan Lake Yettis and High River Heat have byes to start things off.

The Yettis will be back at it in the second round of playoffs, with a home game on July 21.

Provincial playoffs begin the week following.
