Eckville Elementary School and Eckville Junior Senior High School held their Terry Fox Run on Fri., Sept. 21.
Between the two schools they had roughly 250 students participating from kindergarten all the way up to Grade 12.
“It’s always nice to get the little ones and the older ones together and that’s not always easy to do, and it’s just a great community building activity,” said Principal Brian Holland.
Parents were also invited to join the students and staff on the cold and snowy run that afternoon.
The runners completed one lap of the course, which was a little over three kilometres, and there was hot chocolate waiting for participants at the finish line.
The smaller kids ran a shortened version and were at the finish line to cheer one the others at they reached the end.
“I just think that we should feel fortunate that every year we build on the legacy of just a regular guy with a big, audacious, crazy dream who refused to hear no,” said Holland.
Terry Fox, who was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) at the age of 18, decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.
His Marathon of Hope lasted 143 days and 5,373 kilometres before he was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ont.
As of Mon., Sept. 24, the Eckville Elementary School and Eckville Junior Senior High School Terry Fox Run has raised $226.45 to date.
In total, over $750 million has been raised through the annual Terry Fox Run held across Canada and around the world.
