The Eckville Senior Eagles soared to a 6-2 victory over the last place Whitecourt Wild at the Eckville Arena on Nov. 17.

The Eagles sit third place in the standings with five wins, two losses, two overtime wins and one overtime loss.

“We came out to our usual slow start, which has been an issue all year, still working on how we’re going to fix that, but we’re lucky enough it ended up being 1-1 after the first,” said Head Coach Cale Walker.

The Wild had scored the opening goal of the game and the Eagles trailed 1-0 for 10 minutes of the first period before Ian Munro scored his first goal of the game, assisted by Reed Watts, with 4:56 to go.

The Eagles “came out flying” in the second period scoring a total of five goals.

The games’ First Star Ian Munro, from Jagger Bowles and Jared Williams, opened the post-intermission scoring drive.

Four minutes later Coleman Maddox found the back of the net with assistance from Matt Richardson and Chance Abbott.

The fourth and fifth goals of the Saturday night game were came off the stick of Chance Abbott from Ian Munro and Reed Watts at 8:56 and 6:50 remaining in the second.

The Eagles’ final goal of the game came about a minute later when Justin Lawson, from Brian Piper, found the back of the net to make the score 6-1.

“[We] just played with a lot more intensity and urgency,” added Walker. “That’s the biggest thing, that’s what we always stress.”

The Wild got one more past Eagles’ goalie Mackenzie Engel and went into the second intermission 6-2.

Engel saved 33 of the 35 shots made on net and as awarded the games’ Second Star.

The third period went scoreless resulting in a 6-2 win for the Eagles.

“Yeah, we didn’t score a goal [in the third], but it wasn’t because we played bad,” explained Walker. “We had to kill off a couple penalties.”

The Eagles were credited to 16 minutes of penalties in the third period, while the Wild were credited to four.

“We just kind of carried the pace of the game and sort of almost slowed it down and played real defensively and they just kind of ran out of gas,” commented Walker.

The Eagles’ next home game is Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m. against the first place Red Deer Rustlers.

“That’s going to be our biggest test to date, so I mean we got to be very well prepared for that,” said Walker.

Walker added they will be working on a few things in practice to accommodate the challenge.

“We don’t really know what to expect yet other than they’re going to be extremely skilled and talented and hard to play against, that’s for sure,” continued Walker.
