Jane Drummond is running for the Green Party of Alberta in the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre constituency.

Drummond says she has two areas of focus for her constituents.

First, she says it is “essential that we abandon certainty.”

“That would require: embracing change and include diversity; being collaborative and building consensus; expecting the need for networks of approaches to any challenge; and reforming the electoral and governance process to make this possible,” said Drummond in an email.

Second, as a retired nurse, she says she would put her time and energy towards human health.

“I would develop networks of effective policy that provides ecological integrity; adequate housing and food security; meaningful work and leisure; public education and health care; balanced and diverse economy; affordable transportation infrastructure; and social justice,” Drummond explained.

Additionally, Drummond says a wildland park in the Bighorn Country would have “provided the foundations for ecologically sustainable economic diversity in the western part of this constituency.”

She says the proposal failed because it was “so badly managed by the NDP.”

Drummond chose to run with the Green Party of Alberta because she decided no other party deserved her vote, adding she was “very disappointed in the business-as-usual approaches of the conservative right.”

She says the Green Party of Alberta does not support pitting urban Albertans interests against those of rural citizens.

“For too long the Alberta economy, built on resources like petrochemical, forestry and agriculture, have mostly benefited the building of our cities,” Drummond said. “It is time for sustained and thoughtful investment in economic diversification in rural Alberta.”

She says, for example, in Clearwater County there is plenty of opportunity to develop areas such as international eco tourism, leading agriculture innovation to capitalize on climate change, and post-secondary education focused on outdoor living and sustainable development.

Drummond explained the Green Party of Alberta follows its “Green principles,” which include ecological wisdom, social justice, participatory democracy, non-violence, sustainability and respect for diversity.

She says her party has four campaign platforms.

This platform includes an Environmental Bill of Rights, eliminating many of the current bureaucratic interventions that now exist and implementing a Guaranteed Annual Income, a Moratorium on Oil Sands Expansion until the impacts of existing and approved projects are fully assessed, as well as Alberta’s ethical obligation to contribute to the solution of climate change would lead to an orderly transition from dependence on fossil fuel exploitation.
