The Town of Eckville will be expanding the fibre optic lines to connect to a few more Town-owned buildings.

At the recent meeting of Council, it was passed the Town would spend up to $10,000 o extend the lines so a few more building would be ready for wi-fi at some point down the road.

Town Council had a lengthy discussion over the matter, and whether or not now was the right time to do so.

According to Jack Ramsden, chief administrative officer with the Town, right now makes the most sense.

“It would be a good investment at this time,” he said to Council.

The Town has plans to have the fibre optic cable placed for all Town-owned buildings, including the water treatment plant.

Mayor Helen Posti said it was an important addition to have at the community centre, as it helps with potential rentals.

“We get asked all the time if the hall has wi-fi. It has become an important factor in renting,” she said.

Council chose to have the work completed now, as there was no way to tell what rates would be to have the cabe laid in the future.

It was agreed to bring the cable to the community centre, curling rink, arena and Friendship Centre - all of which are owned by the Town.

“We’ll get the fibre to those buildings,” said Ramsden. “It won’t be operational yet but it will be there.”

The Town will look into the cost of making the fibre optics operational, and what the potential ongoing bill will be.

The Town will also be looking at the possibility of off setting the cost by charging for wi-fi access for rentals. Depending on the cost of the ongoing monthly bill, the Town may also approach boards to consider paying for wi-fi in their buildings.
