Edmonton Police cancelled an Amber Alert after finding the abducted boy with his mother in Okotoks.
An off duty Calgary Police Service officer spotted the mother, Brianne Hjalte and her alleged abducted son.
He was unharmed.
Hjalte was arrested by RCMP in Okotoks and remains in custody, say police. Hjalte is facing a charge of abduction under the Criminal Code, Section 283(1).
The alleged abduction took place March 15 at 2:30 p.m. in Edmonton from the Waverley Elementary School in the area of 68 Street and 89 Avenue.
Edmonton Police issued the Amber Alert just before 10 p.m. and advised that the eight-year-old boy was believed to be in imminent danger. The alert was then cancelled a little after 6 a.m.
Police originally believed that they left the area on foot on 89 Avenue. They were believed to be travelling in a 2008 Silver, Jeep Patriot with Alberta plate ZWK 844.
Later in the evening police issued a second alert updating that they believed the pair to be in Buick Century with Alberta license plate MAE 903.
This story had been updated to remove the name of the child who was abducted.
