Air quality alert issued for Eckville

Air quality alert issued for Eckville

The alert was put into place around 4 a.m. this morning

Early this morning Environment Canada expanded a previous Air Quality Advisory for the Red Deer area.

Yesterday the alert was for Red Deer and a few towns in the vicinity. This morning the alert expanded to include Sylvan Lake and Eckville.

Environment Canada warns the ground level smoke is expected to increase throughout the day, which can lead to poor air quality and reduced visibility.

Environment Canada expects the region to face an increase on the Air Quality Index.

As of 8 a.m. the index sat at about a 3 on the scale, which is low risk. Later in the day it is expected to increase to a moderate risk of 4, which may last through the night and into Saturday.

For those with difficulty breathing, it is recommended to stay inside as much as possible while the alert is in place.

It is also recommended to keep windows closed and use an air filtration device such as an air conditioner where possible.
