On Sun., Nov. 11 at 10:45 a.m. members of the community gathered in the Eckville Community Centre to commemorate Remembrance Day.

The service was hosted by the Eckville branch of The Royal Canadian Legion.

The service opened with a call to worship by Rev. Sandra Franklin-Law of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church before the procession of the Legion and colour party.

The procession, lead by a representative from the RCMP, walked through rows of 100 poppies, one for each year since the end of the First World War.

The poppies and the fields they were in were made by the kids at Eckville Elementary School.

Doug Gordon did a tribute to the veterans and the fallen before the laying of the wreaths.

There was a total of 14 wreaths laid at the service.

There were wreaths on behalf of the Government of Canada, the Government of Alberta, the Town of Eckville, the County of Lacombe, The Unknown Soldier, the Korean Veterans Association, the Eckville Legion Members, Eckville High School, Eckville Elementary, the Girl Guides and Brownies.

There were also three wreaths in memory of Sapper Mathie Mikelson, Jim Merriman and the area Alliance who served our country.

After the Last Post was played and two minutes of silence were observed, there was the lighting of the candles.

There was 10 candles and each one symbolized a decade making its way through the past 100 years since the end of the First World War.

After the ceremony the full Community Centre was invited to stay for lunch and then back to the Legion for continued fellowship.

Later at sundown that bells at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church rang 100 times alongside churches across Canada to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War.
