This year Remembrance Day will commemorate 100 years since the armistice from First World War.
Alongside Eckville’s usual Remembrance Day ceremony, Doug Gordon will be leaving crosses and flags at the graves of First World War veterans and St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church will be taking part in Bells of Peace.
There are four First World War veterans buried in the Eckville Cemetery.
“We’re going to put a cross and a Canadian flag at all of the First World War veteran’s graves in the Eckville Cemetery,” explained Doug Gordon.
Gordon will be going to the cemetery Thursday or Friday before Remembrance Day to place the flags and crosses.
“I’ll leave them there for a week,” added Gordon. “They are a Styrofoam cross and if you don’t go pick them up sooner or later then they just blow all over the place and leave a mess.”
People are welcome to go to the cemetery to pay their respects during while the crosses and flags are they if they wish to do so.
Sun., Nov. 11 at 10:30 a.m. the annual Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at the Community Centre.
Rev. Sandra Franklin-Law from St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church will be leading the service and the Church choir will be singing.
Gordon will once again be doing the tribute to the fallen during the Remembrance Day service.
There will also be the traditional laying of the wreaths, including one for the Unknown Soldier.
Representatives from the RCMP honour guard will also be present at the ceremony.
Later in the afternoon on Nov. 11 the bells at St. Paul Presbyterian Church will be ringing 100 times, five seconds a part to signify the 100 years since the end of the First World War.
Eckville Elementary School will be holding their Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 8 at 10:45 a.m.
Eckville Junior/Senior High School’s ceremony will also be on Nov. 8 at 10:30 a.m.
